In case one wants to use the prefix operators (+, -, !, ...) as standalone identifiers one gets the following error message:
scala> def + : Any = null $plus: Any scala> +.toString <console>:1: error: illegal start of simple expression +.toString ^ scala> +; <console>:1: error: illegal start of simple expression +; ^
